How to get Adhesive off Phone Case
24 Aug 2021You’ve just taken one of your funky stickers off your phone and there it is, the dreaded residue that seems destined to stay stubbornly stuck to your phone.
So, what do you do? Do you continue clawing away at the gunk, hoping somehow it’ll miraculously lift off, or do you take a more drastic approach and take out a scraper and attempt to scrape off the residue?
Adhesive can even be a reason why you should not use a screen protector.
There are various ways to clean the adhesive off your phone. Some successfully remove the residue but are harmful to the surface beneath the residue.
Scraping the sticky residue with a metal blade is also not a good idea. It can scratch the surface beneath the residue, damaging your phone case.
Luckily for you, we have the best solutions to removing adhesives from your phone. In this article, we’ll explain all of the different ways you can get rid of that stubborn mess.
How Can I Get Adhesive off My Phone Case?
Firstly, you want to make sure that the material of your phone case works with the cleaning agents you’ll be using. So make sure to double-check that before applying anything.
Some phones have phone skins in place of phone cases. So, It’s important to understand what do phone cases do and the differences between a phone case vs skin.
Be mindful that many cleaning agents have strong chemicals. So, we’re going to add in some natural cleaning substances and you can choose what suits you best.
Important Preparation Before Cleaning Your Phone Case
Before you start cleaning adhesive off your phone case, the first step would be to remove the phone case cover. This is important. You don’t want to submerge your phone and case in any of the cleaning agents, it will damage your phone.
It’s important to understand how to remove your phone case properly.
Once you’ve done that, we can get into removing adhesive from your phone case.
Water
Water. It is as simple as water. It’s a great way to clean anything. It has no harmful chemicals, it's safe and easy to use, and it's effective.
Soapy water is all you need to clean that phone case like brand new. No-where will that sticky residue be seen or felt. No more will there be any stickiness. This method is extremely useful for many things.
Do not submerge the whole phone case in water. This is not necessary; neither do you want to weaken the case materials. A light methodical dabbing with soapy water will do.
Baking Soda
Baking soda can be made into a paste using oil or water. We would personally recommend using water as some phone covers may be oil absorbent.
The wonderful thing about using baking soda to remove those stubborn sticky patches is that it does all the work for you. You don’t have to scratch or scrape, twist or turn anything.
All you have to do is apply the paste mixture to the problem area. When ready, wipe the baking soda paste and watch the residue disappear. It literally goes away.
Peanut Butter
Take that delectable spread and smear it onto that problem area. The natural oiliness of the peanut butter paste will remove the sticky residue.
Just like Baking soda, you do not need to rub it or pat it, just smear it on and wait. Wait for about 15 minutes. Then wipe it off. The residue should have vanished at this point.
Vinegar
Vinegar is a solution mostly made up of acetic acid and water. It is great for cleaning and therefore it is a good choice to loosen, soften and help remove any residue left behind. This can be used after soapy water, or on its own.
Soak a piece of cloth or paper towel in vinegar and place it on the sticky residue. Let the residue soak up the vinegar for a few minutes. This will soften it. Then wipe the residue. It should come right off the phone case, leaving no stickiness behind.
Alcohol
Alcohol is a great eco-friendly way to clean up. It’s great in that it leaves no residue of its own and it dries fast.
Vodka is the ideal choice here. One should avoid the sweeter alcohols, as sugar itself has a habit of leaving a sticker residue behind. Avoid that, as it will only defeat the purpose.
Alcohol wipes are also pretty handy. One can buy them at any pharmacy or soak a piece of cloth or tissue in alcohol and gently rub the sticky residue off.
Cooking Oil
The good old cooking oil is another great eco-friendly way to clean one’s cell phone case.
When the oil is repeatedly dabbed on the sticky spot, it will help loosen the residue. Oil is a very docile cleaner. It is not used as a cleaner all that much. But it is perfect in this case.
An important thing to remember is that you can’t use oil as a cleaning agent for all cases.
Some can absorb the oil, which will lead to a stain. Unless you find stains cute, don’t use cooking oil on absorbent phone cases.
Nail Polish Remover
Nail polish is a powerful cleaning agent, usually for nail polish removal, but it is also very useful when removing sticky residue from a phone cover. I would start by being in a well-ventilated area, as nail polish remover produces fumes.
Pour a little nail polish remover onto a cotton pad or cloth and gently rub the problematic area. It will come off easily. Be sure to wipe the surface clean afterward. The chemicals in the remover could damage your phone cover if left on for an elongated time.
Rubber Eraser
Do you have stationery at home? A rubber eraser works great in removing sticky residue from any surface.
Take the eraser and rub the sticky surface until it rolls away. The bonus about this method is you don’t have to get your hands dirty and there are no funny smells left behind. It’s quick and easy and requires very little effort.
